Jump back in section is hidden when opening a tab via "+" toolbar button

Open data-sync-user opened this issue 5 months ago • 4 comments

Prerequisites

  • Be on the homepage with 0 other tabs open
  • Have “Jump back in” enabled in homepage settings

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Navigate to a web page
  2. Press the “+” button in the navigation toolbar to open a new tab

Actual Result:

Visibility of the jump back in section is delayed

Expected Result:

The jump back in section should immediately be visible on the homepage with an entry from the webpage navigated to in step 1

Notes:

  • Workarounds:
    • [Intermittently] The issue resolves itself after a few (~7) seconds (maybe only when connected to sync?)
    • Opening the tab tray and closing it (either before or after pressing the “+” button in the navigation toolbar) resolves the issue immediately
  • No JBI section issue also occurs in the following scenarios, and is also resolved via the above workaround(s)
    • On app launch
    • When opening a new tab via toolbar swipe gesture
    • When opening a shortcut/story/bookmark in a new tab via context menu

Device & build information

  • Device: iPhone 16 Pro (iOS 26)
  • Build version: v9000 (57649) (7/7/25) / v142 Main Branch

This issue also happens on legacy as well, so not necessarily a bug on new homepage. Since it’s pre-existing, this may be a requirement that was missed or intentional for some reason, but we kept the experience in new homepage as close to legacy unless product specifications.

Matt P Can you verify you see it for legacy as well? Good thing we have the firefox logo vs shortcut heading to help me distinguish between the two.

John Hall Are we confident in whether we will be keeping the jump back in section for the future? I think I heard that we ran a content removal experiment previously, do we have results for it? Or are we testing that with the new experiment? Happy to address this, if we want to prioritize.

Cyndi Chin verified that it does happen on legacy homepage as well - sorry for the misguidance.

FYI, we have not yet run any content removal experiments yet, that will go live with stories/search bar so theres no data there yet afaik

Moving ticket to OPEN and deprioritizing, may want to create a homepage epic that this can live in. Can follow up with John Hall in the next sync.

We can deprioritize this. We intend to remove this section entirely
