Weird behavior with custom url set as new tab

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Firefox and set a custom URL (e.g.ebay.com) as new tab.
  2. Tap on + button from toolbar.
  3. Observe.

Actual Result:

FF homepage is briefly displayed, with ebay.com url in edit mode, before the ebay.com webpage is loaded. A white/black flash is also visible.

Expected Result

http://ebay.com webpage is instantly loaded.

Notes:

This issue is reproducible on both normal and private modes after this scenario.

Device & build information

  • Device: iPhone 15 (17.6), iPhone 16+ (18.4).
  • Build version: v139.2 (56579)

I investigated this and found that the behavior is expected. Depending on whether night mode is enabled or disabled, there may be a brief flash before the website fully loads. As for instant webpage loading, this depends on the user’s internet connection—since a network request is required and the page isn’t cached in memory, it’s nearly impossible to load the site instantly.
