Bazarr Tripping CPU Segfault

After months of headbanging and 3 intel RMA's, I was able to track down a constant ffprobe segfault issue that was reouccuing daily. Seems like ffprobe was tripping on a spefic file on each scan. I ran ffprobe manually and it was fine, so not sure what the disconnect was. I replaced the file and it seems fine so far. But every segfault trip was related to the same file scan in the log.

Although it might be frustrating, there's not much that can be done on Bazarr's side:

  1. we call ratoaq2/knowit with video file path and ffprobe binary path (/usr/bin/ffprobe in you case) as argument (https://github.com/morpheus65535/bazarr/blob/master/bazarr/utilities/video_analyzer.py#L301)
  2. knowit do it's magic by using the 2 arguments and return us the result.
  3. We use the result in the remaining code.

It seems to be a case where you should open and issue with ratoaq2/knowit as instructed in the log file.

On our side, we catch the exception and continue with the next search instead of crashing.

If @nichols89ben replaced the ffprobe binary and everything works now, there is no code to actually fix. We just need to find out the source of the ffprobe binary he is using and make sure a different version is being used. Where does that version of ffprobe come from? Is it from Bazarr or linuxserver?

@JaiZed my understanding is that the file replaced by @nichols89ben is the video file, not the ffprobe binaty. The ffprobe binaty come from the LSIO docker images used by thousands of users.

@morpheus65535 You are correct, I misread the original message. I recall that the KnowIt software has problems with certain video files, especially if they have exotic multi-channel audio streams. However, it seems strange that this python-based software can cause a seg fault in ffprobe. If ffprobe is really seg faulting, then that isn't KnowIt's fault, is it?

@JaiZed unless knowit is calling ffprobe in an exotic way, I wouldn't see how it could be responsible. One thing for sure, they are much closer to investigate this issue than we are.

At best, we could submit a bug to ffprobe if we could design a reproducible use case. Otherwise, I don't see the point for keeping this issue open because there's nothing for us to do.

True, just wanted to bring it to everyones attention. It may be due to the instability of the new intel CPU's, however even with a new microcode patch from a few weeks ago, still tripped up the segfault yesterday. Like I mentioned I was able to run ffbrobe on it outside of docker without it tripping up. And I re-ran it through tdarr in docker and it didn't trip up ffprobe in that instance. I do still have a copy of the original file that was tripping up if needed for anyone to test.

Im not 100% sure on the arguments knowit uses, if theres something you want me to try I can. But for both all I did was a basic "ffprobe 'file'"

The devil is in the details, isn't it? 😉

The arguments KnowIt used are actually in your log file:

subprocess.CalledProcessError: Command '['/usr/bin/ffprobe', '-v', 'quiet', '-print_format', 'json', '-show_format', '-show_streams', '-sexagesimal', '/data/Movies/Space Jam (1996) {tmdb-2300}/Space Jam (1996).mkv']

Just remove the quotes around each argument, as well as the comma separators and you should be good to go. Although, you will probably need to keep the quotes around your video file name because of the embedded spaces.

Same deal, I added a -loglevel debug also to get something back, but left debug off tdarr becuase of length

By same deal, do you mean it crashed in the same way that it crashed under Bazarr? Or did it work like the version with less arguments?

Sorry, behavior was Identical, bazarr tripped a segfault and the tdarr version of ffprobe processed without issues. So regardless of arguments it still happened

LSIO Bazarr image seems to be using ffprobe 6.1.2 and Tdarr 7.0.2. I don't know if LSIO have updated ffprobe yet in Bazarr image but it may the solution here.

It hasn't happened since, it could be a fluke or a very specific setup/CPU combo
