Since Chrome Version 79.0.3945.79 when clicking the plus sign to open a new tab, the tab opens in the background.

It seems that lot's of extension have been waiting for review for more than a week. You can download the new version at github https://github.com/monque/ChromeExtension-ForceBackgroundTab/releases/download/v2.1.4/ForceBackgroundTab.crx

I was able to download and install the latest version and it restored proper operation. What a relief after a couple weeks of unruly tabs!

@monque I still do not see 2.1.4 in the chrome web store. Anything you can do to help push it through?

And thanks for the Extension. Very helpful.

Updated using the link posted by @monque but was getting CRX_REQUIRED_PROOF_MISSING, so I manually installed and it's working fine. (https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-install-chrome-extensions-manually/). I'm using Chromium on *nix, so that might be why.

Can't believe it's been a month now and the update still isn't approved in the Chrome Store!

I'm able to install the extension from this site on Chrome in Developer Mode under Windows 10, but Chrome keeps nagging at me to uninstall it for my own safety...

Chrome store is still showing version 2.2.0 for me.

Edit: Uninstalled and reinstalled seemed to fix it.

Newtab is still going to background in my chromium edge (chromium v83), so it should be pretty much the same. Chrome:newtab is still working so it should be possible though, but weird. I'm willing giving you the log if you give me the instruction how to do it.

Does "chromium edge" means Microsoft Edge or just Chromium?

If you using Microsoft Edge you may try to add edge://newtab in the new options page and make switch to default.

Let me know if this can solve your problem.

It's Microsoft Edge, but it's the new one which using chromium as the engine.

Nope, it doesn't work... and chrome:// is still working in Edge, so it should be fine with that too.

Probably there is a change in chromium v83?

@monque

How can we get new tabs to open in foreground? This doesn't work (for Edge or Chrome).
