RPM Group deprecated by Fedora

Hello, I'm looking for guidance regarding group parameter which is required by this plugin. According to fedora wiki, the group has been deprecated (but not removed) from both Fedora and RHEL/CentOS. And from what I can tell, rpm-build does not require the group attribute.

Is this simply a matter of things changing and not being caught between two projects? Or am I missing a different point why group is required?
