This looks like a project with lots of good ideas and well-documented protocols:

I came across Syncthing when looking at things related to Nymote, though I haven't followed the project for a while now (they had a brief kerfuffle with the Ind.ie project). The Syncthing forum seems low volume but active.

The post there on SyncthingFUSE might be interesting too.
