Adding slicing to the abd data

Hi @moble, @duetosymmetry, and @keefemitman. I added the slicing option to the abd data which would be useful for my project. Please review the PR and let me know if there are any comments.

The RTD build should succeed after #102 is merged (and this PR rebased on top of it?)

To reduce confusion, I closed PR #103. This PR holds the commits from #103 as well, and it doesn't affect the part being changed in PR #104. Either Keefe or I will rebase after one of the PR is merged.
