Failed to install most recent net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd
Received the following error when trying to install the amd addon from flathub:
Error: Error pulling from repo: Error reading from file: Bad address error: Failed to install net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd: Error pulling from repo: Error reading from file: Bad address
I had the previous release of Speech Note with the amd addon installed for awhile and it worked great. But when I update to the latest flatpak from flathub the amd addon fails with the above error.
This is such a great app. I just hope to get the AMD GPU acceleration working.
my system is
Ubuntu Mate 24.04.2 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4500 (12) @ 4.208GHz GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590 Memory: 1563MiB / 15851MiB
Thank you for reporting.
The AMD add-on is still supported and should work. I tried it a few seconds ago and had no problems installing it.
The new version of the package net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd (v1.4.0) is a bit different from the previous version. It uses so-called "external data". This means that some binary components are downloaded locally directly from the original sources during the installation of the package. You should not block the following URLs in your local network:
https://download.pytorch.org https://repo.radeon.com
I am not suggesting that you block these, but this is just one of the possible explanations as to why the installation failed.
As always, I also recommend uninstalling and reinstalling all Speech Note packages.
Thank you for the quick response. Although I am not having any success, I will keep trying. When I try to go to the https://download.pytorch.org/ I get an "access denied" response. Maybe that is my issue. But at least I am still able to use Speech Note. Thank you for your wonderful app.
Something is not right with your local flatpak setup. Someone on this forum had a similar problem. The solution was also:
flatpak uninstall --unused
flatpak repair
I am experiencing the same issue, though in my case this is my first time trying to install the AMD add-on.
https://download.pytorch.org/ also gives me an "AccessDenied" error even when I use a different computer.
I've used the flatpak commands you recommended, but the issue persists.
System Info: OS: Tuxedo OS CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS GPU: AMD Radeon 780M RAM: 38.5 GiB
Since I'm using integrated graphics, I realise I may not derive much benefit from the add-on if it works at all; I just wanted to try it out. Either way, thank you! Speech Note is amazing, even more so with the new TTS engines included in the latest release.
The problem could be the available disk space. When the package is installed, it takes up a lot of space because it decompresses a lot of ROCm libraries, which are very heavy. After installation, the leftovers are deleted and disk space is restored, but you still need to have at least 70 GB available during installation (I don't know exactly how much). Yes, I know, that's ridiculous.
If your flatpak install is "system", this will use up your root partition (exactly /var/lib/flatpak) and you need to have ~70GB available space on it. Maybe I don't observe this problem because I only use "user" installation where everything is stored in ~/.local/share/flatpak. My /home is on a much larger partition than /.
This is just a hypothesis.
Thanks for the swift reply. That might explain it. Flatpak install is "system" and the root partition currently has only 121 GB of free space, which seemed plenty until today. On the other hand, if only ~70 GB is required, shouldn't it still work?
@hestelvar Size is definitely an issue, but if you have a lot of space, we are dealing with another problem. I am still trying to reproduce this on my system, but so far I have not succeeded.
Can you try -v option when installing. This will show more verbose output.
flatpak install net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd -v
By the way, I have added more information about the "available disk space" requirements to the readme file.
Add-on packages use so-called "extra-data". This means that during installation, several binary modules are downloaded from the original sources and merged with the Flatpak package. Due to this process, additional disk space is temporarily required when installing the add-on. Make sure you have enough disk space on the partition where flatpak applications are installed. When the Flatpak package is installed system-wide (default), the applications are stored in /var/lib/flatpak. In case of user installation (--user), the apps are stored in ~/.local/share/flatpak.
Disk space required for the installation of the add-on package:
Add-on Size AMD add-on 55 GiB NVIDIA add-on 15 GiB
Here are the last few lines of output from running that command.

Good idea – adding disk space requirement to the README file. Is there something else I can do to help you get to the bottom of this?
@hestelvar Thank you very much for your help. At the moment I am still trying to reproduce the problem. I don't need anything else at this stage.
I'll throw my hat in with the rest of "not working" others. I've tried the flatpak uninstall --unused & flatpak repair and have over 400GB free disk space. I monitored disk utilization through the process and during the Deploy phase disk space dropped only to 416GB (from a starting 422GB, nowhere near the expected 70G+ expansion - btrfs volume). Verbose install log, enclosed.
@starbock To be honest, I still don't know where the problem might lie. I still can't reproduce it. My new "hypothesis" is too old flatpak version. What outputs flatpak --version on your system?
For me flatpak --version outputs:
Flatpak 1.14.6
@starbock To be honest, I still don't know where the problem might lie. I still can't reproduce it. My new "hypothesis" is too old flatpak version. What outputs
flatpak --versionon your system?
Flatpak 1.14.6 on Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon v 6.2.9.
However, I upgraded to Flatpak 1.16.1 and have the same problem (even though fixes in 1.15.x suggested they might be related).
I'm afraid I have to add a 'me too' to this one - just tried installing the add-on via terminal, and got the same error. Further, when searching for 'Speech Note AMD' in the Software Manager (Linux Mint, 22.1), no results (even with 'Show Unverified Flatpaks' enabled).

I uninstalled speechnote from my user and installed speechnote and the amd addon to the system instead of user by running the install commands as root. Everything seems to be working, hope it doesn't have any unintended side effects.
I knew to do this because of this error (from command sudo strace -f -e trace=network flatpak install net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd , you really should use strace with network traces to debug this stuff)

Nice! I'm glad you managed to install it. It is possible to install net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd using --user as well. I have two physical systems and I managed to install it on both, so it is definitely possible, but for reasons unknown to me, it does not always work.
Can anyone else with the same problem try using strace to get more information about the error?
- for flatpak user installations:
strace -f -e trace=network flatpak install --user net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd
- for flatpak system wide installations:
sudo strace -f -e trace=network flatpak install net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.amd
I ran the strace command (system-wide in my case); I've pasted the last 1000 lines here.
I hope it's useful; it's rather beyond me!
@hestelvar Thanks! It looks like there was a problem downloading the ROCm package. I checked this URL and had no problems downloading it on my computer. Maybe it was just a temporary issue of repo.radeon.com server?? I'm not sure, but it looks like a network problem to me.
