Emoji not rendered when ancestor element's parent changes

Browsers: Firefox 114, Edge 114 Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to https://quip-web-app.web.app/ulkka (based on API availability, it might take up to a minute or so to load completely)
2. Click on the reply button (bottom right end) on the first post
3. Open the emoji popover by clicking the … button in the emoji row
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and repeat steps 2 and 3 for the last post
5. Scroll through the emoji list; most categories will be empty

Note: If you scroll to the top and click on the theme toggle (top right), the emojis will become visible again.
