How to set up environment for code?

I would like to build this into an exe, and run my own modifications but i cannot seem to get the environment setup correctly. i have thus far done:

1. Install gcc compiler
2. Ran this code visual studio 2022 and vscode both of which gave me build errors
3. installed EGE using https://xege.org/

If there is any hope for guidance to how to build this project, that would be helpful
