Additional case where this happens:

In some cases it makes words longer instead of shorter, and sometimes this results in the title being too long, even though at first it was not too long.

Once I had a title containing "first" but was two characters longer than the maximum, so I changed it to "1st" but then the auto-correction changed it back to "first" and then complained again that it is too long.
