what about powerline in terminal version How start it in terminal

Same way, although it doesn't seem to be as pretty.

Turns out I didn't have the fonts installed, but even after I installed them the modeline appears the same as above, and I can't find where in powerline the font dir is looked up (i.e. $HOME/.local/share/fonts/).

you have to set the font for the mode-line styles to be the font that has those glyphs. it doesn't look for them in every font unfortunately.

there is also functionality in Emacs that tells it to use certain fonts for certain glyph ranges. but I don't recall what that setting is.
