Terminal incompatibility in OS X Mavericks or higher when SSH with nano

I installed nano for easier editing capabilities while SSH'd into Levinux. When trying to run nano, received error:

"Error opening terminal: xterm-256color"

Found the solution to be turn OS X terminal emulation down to something such as xterm versus xterm-256color and to close all terminal windows and reopen.
