This would probably completely break backwards compatibility, but would permit avoiding the huge feature delay between releases of cmdstan and rstan.

This didn't happen previously, which was the point of watch_stan really, but sometime recently something changed (at least on Ubuntu).

Currently the time remaining it only updates when it has received a new sample in one of the chains. Better to both account for time elapsed since last update but...
