So what tags do you need? We auto-tag using the release.ss script.

Can this be adapted to the new build and install infrastructure of release 0.16 plus recent patches that turn gxi into a C program? That should make things much easier.

Also, by hardwiring the debian paths of /usr/lib and /usr/bin you should be able to wholly do away with autoconf. Just a Makefile, neither Makefile.in nor configure.ac.
