Simple Browser "Add element to chat" does not allow element selection (no highlight/selection UI appears)

Open sedaming opened this issue 7 months ago • 2 comments

Type: Bug

VS Code Version:
Version: 1.101.0-insider (user setup) Commit: 1250f01c2bd215b6d5d07d933a62c96df35da3ea Date: 2025-05-13T05:04:06.771Z Electron: 35.2.2 ElectronBuildId: 11520120 Chromium: 134.0.6998.205 Node.js: 22.14.0 V8: 13.4.114.21-electron.0 OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26100

OS:
Windows 11

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the Simple Browser in VS Code Insiders.
  2. Navigate to any web page (e.g., Wikipedia).
  3. Click the "Add element to chat" button in the Simple Browser toolbar.
  4. Click "Start" to begin selecting an element.

Expected Behavior:
The web page should become visually highlighted (e.g., with a blue overlay), and as I move my mouse, individual elements should be highlighted for selection. Clicking an element should select it and send it to the chat.

Actual Behavior:
After clicking "Start," the page is dimmed/overlaid, but no elements are highlighted as I move the mouse. I am unable to select any element on the page. The selection UI does not appear, and clicking does nothing.

Impact:
This breaks the workflow for sharing specific web elements in chat, reducing the usefulness of the Simple Browser for collaborative tasks.

VS Code version: Code - Insiders 1.101.0-insider (1250f01c2bd215b6d5d07d933a62c96df35da3ea, 2025-05-13T05:04:06.771Z) OS version: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26100 Modes:

Same problem on Mac

could you double check in the latest insiders? i've shipped a few improvements on the webview detection there.

also, keep in mind that most external sites shouldn't work with the simple browser - should have no problems with locally hosted sites.
