Polish the workspace index indicator

Open bpasero opened this issue 8 months ago • 7 comments

It is nice that the workspace index indicator landed in the status bar, but it needs polish.

Learn more

Rather than having a big blue link, leverage the new support for actions to learn more to the right of the header:

Progress message

I find this line does not read well:

We should try to tweak this because the info is not all on the same level.

Also, when the status updates, it breaks to the next line because the hover does not update its size.+

@bpasero agreed - the new action button will help reduce visual noise. Will provide some alternatives shortly

Some progress:

  • learn more action frees up the main label from being a link
  • less prominent action on the detail field
  • https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/244861

I am still not 100% sure how to render this nicely, esp. when lots of things go on from left to right:

  • main label
  • detail label with action
  • progress spinner (possible both on main label and detail label)

One idea I had was to drop the detail to a second row and then separate the action to the right if there is any, but would love for some design input here @mrleemurray

Instead of trying to squeeze complex actions into the dashboard, could you open the quick pick with available options:

This approach would allow more actions to the user, while maintaining the compact dashboard design.

We can look into standardizing the 'action' button, either with a codicon, or specific word i.e. configure.

@bpasero what do you think?

Yes, I like the idea of keeping the dashboard informal and having a richer UI for managing things beyond.

I think the action button should have contextual wording to help the user understand the action e.g. configure, upgrade, reset would be more helpful

Yes I think this looks relatively bad:

@mjbvz thoughts on having the approach as outlined in https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/245332#issuecomment-2863126561, I can try to make a PR

That looks good to me. I will be out for the rest of the iteration but can help with this in June

@mjbvz any updates on this item?

mrleemurray avatar Jul 04 '25 11:07 mrleemurray

The resizing bug is still there

mjbvz avatar Jul 07 '25 16:07 mjbvz

Any progress around this?
