The Jupyter notebook kernel picker isn't loading up the menu

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes

  • VS Code Version: VSCodium 1.77.3
  • OS Version: endeavourOS - version not applicable since the distro is rolling release.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Create test.ipynb
  2. Click on the "Select kernels" button
  3. Textbox opens up with "Type to choose a kernel source" prompt.
  4. Menu doesn't load, a never-ending loading animation is displayed instead.

Note: The application is able to find the kernels just fine, since it displays them all when I try to filter them. Therefore, this is most likely a UI bug: kernels

Please could you enable logging as follows:

  • Open settings & go into Jupyter->Logging
  • Change the value to verbose
  • Reload VS Code,
  • Attempt to repro the issue & then copy the output from the Jupyter output panel.

Looks like Jupyter is done refreshing the list of the kernels, VSC should display the providers

I had the same issue of being unable to select the kernel for a notebook on a remote server. My problem was the installation of the Jupyter extension on the remote server. I went to the Extension page and clicked on Switch to Pre-release Version. That fixed the issue.

I had a similar issue and managed to fix it today. The reason is that I have 2 PCs connecting to the same server. However each PC have a different version of vscode. This results in 2 different "ms-toolsai.jupyter" installed in vscode-server/extentions, thus the older version of vscode cant load jupyter correctly and jupyter cant detect kernels. The simplest way to solve it is to update and sync the version of vs-code on multiple clients. You can also mannually specify verision in extensions.json. Hope it could help.
