Agent Mode Prompts Disappear Without Response or Error in Copilot Chat (Ask/Edit Work Fine)
Copilot Chat Extension Version: 1.317.0 VS Code Version: 1.100.1 (user setup) Commit: 91fa95bccb027ece6a968589bb1d662fa9c8e170 Electron: 34.5.1 Node.js: 20.19.0 OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26100 OS Version: Windows 11 Home 24H2 26100.4061 Feature: Agent mode (Ask and Edit modes work) Selected model: All (e.g. GPT 4.1, Claude 3.7 Sonnet)
Steps to Reproduce:
- Open Copilot Chat panel in VS Code.
- Enter a prompt and select "Agent" mode.
- Submit the prompt.
Expected:
Prompt is processed and response is shown, as with Ask/Edit modes.
Actual:
Prompt is accepted, Agent mode selector appears, but then the prompt disappears with no feedback or response. No error is shown, and nothing appears in the logs. Ask and Edit modes work as expected.
Notes:
- This occurs with all available models.
- No indication if the prompt is sent to the LLM or if there is an internal error.
- Logs show successful authentication and initialization, but no agent-specific errors or feedback.
- This issue makes Agent mode unusable, as prompts are silently dropped with no user feedback or error.
- Please advise on further troubleshooting or if additional diagnostics are needed.
having updated VS Code to 1.100.2 the issue is still persisting
Hi Jared,
Have you found a solution to this? I can't figure this problem out on my Windows 11 machine.
my solution was to switch to my older machine that now runs ubuntu...
also, just updated to the following specs
Version: 1.100.3 (user setup)
Commit: 258e40fedc6cb8edf399a463ce3a9d32e7e1f6f3

OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26100
GitHub Copilot: 1.330.1610
GitHub Copilot Chat: 0.27.3
Here's some useful information that you could share with us to help fix this issue:
- The current model(s) that you're experiencing this with
- A request id (found in Output -> Copilot Chat)
- any error logs from either the Window or Copilot Chat output channels
potentially a duplicate of #12599
it's not particularly similar to #12599 , in my case no output is generated at all - the chat pane simply swallows the prompt and doesn't render any effect in particular.
This happens with all models (GPT4.0, GPT4.1, Sonnet 4, Sonnet 3.7, Sonnet 3.5, Gemini Pro 2.5).
here are my current versions

Window output shows the following message after receiving an agent mode prompt
2025-06-21 10:20:46.921 [error] [Window] Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'variableData'): TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'variableData')
at vscode-file://vscode-app/c:/Users/jared/AppData/Local/Programs/Microsoft%20VS%20Code/resources/app/out/vs/workbench/workbench.desktop.main.js:2027:41452
Thanks for the error. I'm pushing a change for that, but unfortunately that's an error while handling a different error and is not the real underlying issue.
I am experiencing the same issue on Visual Studio Code on macOS. When I submit a prompt to a large language model in agent mode, the text vanishes and is neither processed nor recorded.
Have to report the same issue on Debian 12. The funny thing here is that on my work laptop running Windows 11 with WSL and Debian 12 its working just fine, but i have to admit that i don't really know which part of VSCode is been run on Windows and which is run in WSL with such a setup. Dont know to much about VSCode internally.
Please check for any errors you see in the Window output channel. Also, it may be fixed in Insiders.
Ahh thanks. Im getting an error that the agent is currently disabled.
2025-08-09 01:17:59.822 [error] [Window] Error while handling chat request: Agent is currently disabled: Error: Agent is currently disabled at XSe.eb (vscode-file://vscode-app/usr/share/code/resources/app/out/vs/workbench/workbench.desktop.main.js:2047:72206) at async vscode-file://vscode-app/usr/share/code/resources/app/out/vs/workbench/workbench.desktop.main.js:2047:68949
I checked my settings and it states that "chat.agent.enabled" is true.
ok the insider build worked.
Now running 1.103.2 and I'm getting response in agent mode again.
Was having similar/same (*) issue inversion 1.372.0 and an extension restart solved it:
- Disable the extension
- Restart the extension (you'll see the button to restart once you disable the extension)
- Enable the extension
(*) My problem was that I submitted my request and saw no response in the chat. Still, the agent was working in the background as I saw the files being modified, but I had no clue when it was done.
