Chat history erased after force reloading window

  • Copilot Chat Extension Version: v0.26.7
  • VS Code Version: 1.99.3
  • OS Version: Linux 6.14.2-arch1-1

I just had to use Developer: Reload Window for the first time since installing the latest update. After doing so, my entire chat history was gone. This has never happened before. I have reloaded numerous times without losing my history.

The chat remains listed in the history but clicking on it creates a New Chat. Clicking the Open In Editor button on the old chat doesn't help.

I was not able to reproduce the issue by forcing a reload again. The problem that lead to the reload was a half-applied patch that failed due to a network hiccup. I was left with the Applying Edits toast visible but progress had stalled. Usually when this happens I just reload the window, revert the file, and re-apply the patch. I'm not sure what was different about the circumstances this time around. If it happens again I will report back with any additional details I can muster.

Hello, I also encountered this problem after reloading the window, so the previous chat history can not be found back? Have you solved this problem? Or is there another place to see the chat history?

Have you solved this problem?

I have not encountered the issue again.

I also had not checked the status of that lost chat history until just now. Turns out that it was restored at some point! The chat can be selected with the full conversation history intact.

To access chat history use:

Ctrl+Shift+P » Chat: Show Chats...

Do you mean that it automatically restored your previously lost chat records at some point? Even when I entered this command in VSCode, I still couldn't find my previous chat records.

It was not automatic. I had created a new chat and continued working, then closed the project until today. I used the Command Palette as mentioned to Show Chats and clicked the old chat that had previously stopped working. The last time I tried that it would just open new chat. This time, the chat history was restored. I have not updated vscode so I do not know what conditions caused it to start working. I have rebooted once since that day so possibly that helped but I cannot say for sure.

OK, now I can also open the chat I created this morning. However, the chats before the window was forcibly reloaded are no longer visible, which is a bit troublesome....

Very sorry for the trouble. Can you check the Window output channel for errors?

Could you please tell me where to check? I haven't noticed any error messages.

I haven't noticed any error messages.

I just encountered this as well in version 1.102.0-insider. I didn't lose the whole history but the last couple of hours, probably everything after I had relaunched the app the last time.
