Copilot took too long to get ready. Please try again.
Type: Bug
This keeps happening, even after I restart VS Code and starting a new chat session. It happens in both Insider edition and stable.

Sorry to hear that. Can you set chat.setupFromDialog to false, restart and try again? What do you see?
Setting chat.setupFromDialog to false and restarting for me resulted in the issue being described over here where my account is signed in to github, but chat keeps showing me I need to sign in
Screenshot showing I do get signed in
Screenshot showing what I see in the CHAT window
In that case entirely signing out, restarting and signing in again, does not help?
Thanks for the intel, @bpasero !! I appreciate the assist 🤞 we'll be able to sort something out.
I'm afraid that didn't help. Signing out, restarting, and then signing back in results in a same state as described above. To nix any ambiguity, here's what I see signing out and back in:
Which pops open the following views:
Opening the link results in seeing the Sign in with Github screenshot I posted earlier.
@ArtyMcFly any chance you are using multiple GH accounts in VS Code?
@TylerLeonhardt maybe you could also chime in with some auth smarts.

I saw some folks on the linked thread advised a couple of things, I was able to get this working 🎉
I started looking for some error logs and found some
[info] [auth] Invalid copilot token: missing token: 403
I was getting a bunch of these, found a few recent stack overflow posts and some combination of the following did it for me:
- Verified I was on the correct account for Github
- Logged out, uninstalled the extensions and then restarted my machine
- reinstalled the extensions, added the following to my settings.json (may have restarted VS Code again here)
"remote.extensionKind": {
"GitHub.copilot": [ "ui" ],
"GitHub.copilot-chat": ["ui"],
}
I am failing to find which tab had this intel (otherwise I would link it) so going off of memory here. I guess there is ui and then there is workspace for these options. The 403 missing tokens allegedly comes from WSL failing on some callout and the ui does something on the localhost, working some networking magic between WSL and Windows.
- on Github I went through and toggled some of the options for Copilot
- I re-signed in - something worked this go around and I'm in.
Not certain which steps did it for me, maybe something sticks out and someone can confirm?
Thanks @bpasero for working through this with me!
that setting forces the Copilot extensions to run on the client side (so the Windows side) instead of WSL side... if there's some weird proxy behavior with WSL, that could explain it... if you get rid of that setting (thus allowing Copilot to run on the WSL side again) does it fail?
Removing the : ["ui"] setting and restarting VS code resulted in the "Sign in to Github" message occurring again. Albeit, I'm seeing a slightly different error this time around 🤷 Same manifestation where logging in via the links appear to do nothing.

Adding the following again and restarting VS Code allowed copilot to work again.

"GitHub.copilot-chat": ["ui"],

@chrmarti some interesting proxy stuff with remote here
@chrmarti some interesting proxy stuff with remote here
I bet it's not proxy issue. I will try to reinstall vs code the see what will be the case since I'm not using any vpn nor proxy.
"remote.extensionKind": {
"GitHub.copilot": [ "ui" ],
"GitHub.copilot-chat": ["ui"],

solved my problem, it's working again. But now its running on my local machine if I understand correctly. Does this have any down sides?
I fixed mine via uninstalling GitHub Copilot extension, restarted the vscode then install again via Set Up copilot at the bottom copilot icon
IDK if installing this way could fix the problem or maybe reinstalling github copilot could fix the issue
I commented on #7860. For me the issue was only flashing in Insiders every now and then and would go away in new sessions but today Copilot doesn't work anymore. Reinstalling, restarting, switching versions don't help. I switched to the stable version and for now there's no issues there.
@ArtyMcFly Please check the output of F1 > Developer: GitHub Copilot Chat Diagnostics while connected to WSL in VS Code and append it here.
