- In the bottom left corner of the Visual Studio Code window, click the Accounts icon, hover over your GitHub username, and click the Sign out button.
- To reload Visual Studio Code, press F1 to open the command palette, and select Developer: Reload Window.
- After Visual Studio Code reloads, sign back in to your GitHub account.
but, the issue persists, and my vscode and copilot extension's versions are latest.

for now, I installed VSCode 1.91(previous version), and Copilot Chat 0.17.1. Someone emailed me and told me about it, but I can't find them in this issue 😖
CopilotChat works, but of course, that doesn't solve the problem.
Same issue here. I updated both VSCode and Copilot chat to the latest version and the chat stopped working. The error showed in the chat was: certificate has expired. I tried each one of the previously suggested solutions and nothing worked. Also had to comeback to the same versions @flcYtb mentioned and it is working again
Installing Copilot v17.2 worked for me. v19 is acting up.
I'm running VSC Insiders Version: 1.93.0-insider (Universal) btw!
Had to revert to version v1.201.0 for copilot and revert github chat to v0.17.0. If i both to the latest version it doesn't work at all. this seems to be the only work around

@TylerLeonhardt Thank you for the info, my value of the github.copilot.preferredAccount setting is my GH account( s-***@***c.jp Should I just write the correct account name here...? ), I have verified that I can sign out of GH and then sign back in to GH with that account.
I remove it and leave it blank, I install latest vsCode( 1.92 ) and GitHub Copilot Chat( 0.18.1 ), copilot chat seems to be working correctly.
What's odd here is that preferredAccount shouldn't ever be an email address, but instead your username (or empty). Clearly several users are hitting this same behavior where it ends up getting set to an email address instead of the username ...but it's odd to me how this happens... more to investigate. Also, without a repro this is quite challenging.
Do you have any other GitHub related extensions installed? Are you running in Codespaces maybe?

I don't use Codespaces.

the value for preferred account was empty on the latest update for github copilot , but when i revert back to version v1.201.0 for copilot and revert github chat to v0.17.0 it shows up as my Email rather than my username. As far as extensions related to git. actions, Code Space, copilot, pull request, repositories, and git theme.
edit: deleted my preferred account it did fetch the auth token again, it started to work.
I couldn't use my extension in vscode until now, did anyone solve the problem?😭
@Martianing Have you tried this method? Of course, you need to enable github copilot (https://github.com/settings/copilot), but if you've already done that, just leave the field blank. ↓↓↓↓↓

Now there is still a problem, I don't even know what went wrong, it's just that when I open the vscode extension again there is nothing, and there is no response to sending messages！
@Martianing If leaving github.copilot.preferredAccount blank doesn't solve your problem, it's probably a different issue than mine, so you might want to create a new issue and report it as a different problem.

I installed the VS Code Insiders build and the pre-release version of Github Copilot Chat.
I confirmed that Github Copilot Chat works properly when I leave github.copilot.preferredAccount blank or enter an account name, but does not work when I enter an email address.

@TylerLeonhardt I checked it! It seems to work without any problems.
GitHub Copilot works when github.copilot.preferredAccount is blank or is the name of an account already logged in to GitHub.
If for some reason a string that is not an account name (such as an email address or a meaningless string like "aaa") is entered, I am prompted to log in to GitHub, and once I log in it is replaced with my account name and GitHub Copilot starts working.

@mjkokid Are you using version 0.18.2? The current version is 0.20.0, so why not try updating to the latest version? I'm using the current version (0.20.0) and it's working fine.

The latest version seems to be 0.20 or 0.21.
If you uninstall and reinstall it and it still shows 0.18.2, then I think it's a different problem, so I think it would be better to open a separate issue.
