Setting up kits without selection

How can I set up kits without selection? Like, is there a way setting it up in settings.json so that i don't need to click the kits every first time it configures a project.

We are very interested in this feature. Is there a particular reason it appears to be kicked down the road since 2019? Is there a workaround?
