How do differential updates work?

It's not really explained in the documentation how we should expect this to work. Does codepush do a diff on the bundle.ios.js and then only download the parts needed? For example if I just change one line of code, my code push download size still weighs in at 3-4MB. Am I doing something wrong - is there an extra step involved?
