Shadowbox specific instructions

Open kiki-lee opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

I'd like a tag for shadowboxing specific instructions. Usually it would be used for the first (second) instruction in a tutorial (following the modal), but could also be used to indicate that "this is an important step"

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Students often don't realize that there are instructions on the side, and even when they do, reading them isn't what occurs to them first. This shadowbox doesn't interrupt any functionality, it just helps direct their attention where it's needed.

Describe the solution you'd like For now, I'd like a shadowbox since it's low-design and low-engineering. It can also be triggered in other places as part of an onboarding redesign or a "help/documentation" redesign in the future. Even if it's never used again after this 6 months, it should be a tiny enough lift that it's worth being a band-aid.

Describe alternatives you've considered We have modals, but those do the opposite of what I need (they pull attention away from the instruction box) and we'll eventually do an all-up redesign where we may have more interactive ways to highlight things…but those are all a good hop of time in the future.

Additional context I suspect it would take just as much time for the designers to build a prototype of this in figma as it would for Shannon to add a tag for it in a build.

Hi @kiki-lee -- are you proposing that the shadowbox would only appear on the first panel of instructions, where they are directed to click "Next" - and only on that panel? It obviously would get in the way if they had a task to accomplish on the main canvas, right?

If we do do it, it should match the shadowbox specs that currently exist behind the modals.

Here's my thinking:

If we can get the full caboodle done by 7/22, let's keep this part of the all-up redesign. If not, I'd prefer to not have to wait until 7/23 for it (which would be the next breaking release) since it's such a quick fix. Before we implement widely, we should test to make sure that it helps students focus on the instructions. If we can get a version in a build by 4/15, I have a classroom I can test with.

My preference is that it doesn't happen for every first instruction. I'd only want it to happen when the content creator feels that it's important to highlight the instruction (first instructions in beginner tutorials…middle instructions in advanced tutorials where people might not need to read as closely, etc.)

And I'm totally a fan of having all of the shadowboxing match (especially if we use it in other areas for onboarding and/or videos.) I'd like to see it all a few shades darker, but I'll leave that up to y'all :)

This was part of the tutorial redesign options.
