Graphing Calculator sometimes falsely shows "The expression is empty"

Open ghost opened this issue 4 years ago • 16 comments

Describe the Bug:

The Graphing Calculator sometimes falsely shows the error stating, "The expression is empty".

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open Calculator. Switch to Graphing mode.
  2. Copy the following into the Expression Box:
sin x +cos x

OR

sin x+cosx

You may also enter this sequence using your keyboard. But DO not alter the spacing. Otherwise you may not see the error.

You will see an error stating that the expression is empty.

Empty Expression

  1. Close all running instances of the Calculator, and then open it again.
  2. Type first expression as 'sin(x)+cos(x)' and press Enter.

This time the graphing calculator is able to plot the function.

Edit This error also occurs in case of the following function:

h(x) = sin x/cos x

Expected Behaviour:

The Calculator should readily plot this function.

Device and Application Info:

OS Build: 10.0.19041.264 Architecture: x64 Application Version: 10.2005.23.0 Region: India (EN-US) Dev Version Installed: No

Requested Assisgnment:

I'm just reporting this problem. I don't want to fix it.

This is your friendly Microsoft Issue Bot. I've seen this issue come in and have gone to tell a human about it.

Thanks for the detailed report! This error definitely appears when I copy those strings into the equation box, but I am not able to reproduce when typing the expression in manually, so that might be intermittent.

@grochocki This issue was spotted earlier in #1278, but probably wasn't fixed properly.

Thanks, we believe this might be a different underlying issue than what we addressed in #1278.

grochocki avatar Jul 20 '20 03:07 grochocki

@grochocki This issue is certainly not limited to those strings. It can appear anytime when we try to enter a complex expression.

There is indeed this problem. A similar problem occurs when inputting the vertex formula of the quadratic function. The calculator will not output the correct image, but inputting the corresponding expansion of the quadratic function can output the correct image. The message also showed: The expression is empty.Device and Application Info:App Ver 10.2012.21.0Version: Windows 10 Education Insider Preview Version number: 2004

I'm having this issue even with simple expressions sometimes such as trying to enter a very simple expression such as x or x * 2 or x^2 even when typed out this is when trying to graph multiple functions simultaneously

Also occurred for me with y=(100/91)x+200

Happens with e^x^3[two spaces]/6 [arrow right]*e^-x +1 (exactly these keys pressed)

Also happens if there is too much in the input. paste. x−1/3! x^3+1/5! x^5−1/7! x^7+1/9! x^9−1/11! x^11+1/13! x^13−1/15! x^15+1/17! x^17 and it works fine but add the next thing in the series (-1/19! x^19) and it gives "The expression is empty".

This error still occurs on, for example, y=(x-1)(x-2) but y=(x-1)1(x-2) is fine:

This is still an issue, though it can somehow be fixed by retyping part of the expression string for some reason

It's still an issue, bug was not fixed.

Still an issue :(

For me this issue happens basically every second time I enter whatever function. image

It's still an issue.
