[Run] Support press the same key twice to open Run
Please choose an unused key combination as the default.
Alt
+ Space
has opened the focussed window's system menu since Windows 3, possibly earlier! :). I find that keystroke is occasionally useful to bring an offscreen windows back onscreen via the keyboard (win
+space
, m
, then cursor keys). Here's what alt
+space
"should" do on Windows:
I tried to remap PT Run to Win
+ Space
(which would match how I use OS X with a Windows keyboard) but PT doesn't seem to support that remapping here:

I confirmed Win+Space will work if mapped to Alt-Space using PT Keyboard Manager method. Can't use Alt-Alt because double keys not allowed.

Thank you. Very useful. For PT Run, why did PowerToys devs decide to hijack Alt Space which is already used by Windows for "Pop up window menu" as stated in above link????
I've been using alt+space since before I had a mouse. Sorry, Powertoys Run, that seat is reserved.
I just figured out that I could remap the key combination that starts PT Run from PT Run settings itself, thus freeing up Alt-Space to be its normal Windoze default.
Open PT settings -> PowerToys Run -> Shortcuts -> Open PowerToys Run .
Type Ctrl-Space in the box and you can use that key combination to open PT Run. AFAIK, Ctrl-Space is not used by anything standard in Widoze, but please let me know if it is.
Other Alt or Ctrl combinations will work too, but my conflict with other functions.
The main issue is that the default shouldn't be Alt
+ Space
because it's already reserved by Windows.

Yes, but as above, you can't map the Windows key.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately Ctrl
+ Space
is a default in Visual Studio:
Win
+ R
could have been a sensible default as it's been used for years to run an application. But PT Run doesn't seem to be able to run commands unless it can find an app (e.g. "notepad" works, but "bash" doesn't unless it's already running) so it can't properly replace win
+r
yet.
It's great that users can choose an alternative that suits them. I've gone with ctrl
+ alt
+ space
.
This feature was merged with d9c4abe0df9a88b9c2c93f6fd5ddc10e60e83bed @traies would you accept a PR to add the Ctrl modifier too ?
I'd love to be able to search using PowerToys Run once you press the Windows key. It's already a replacement for Windows Search. At this point why not just replace it?

I use alt+space for this exact purpose. When enabling/disabling primary/secondary displays, it's a common thing.
I personally use Sizer from BrianApps. The shortcut is win+ctrl+z. I centre windows all the time. it is indeed overboard 🤪

That's cool but it doesn't get back the shortcut I've been using since the 90s ;)
I'd love to see this added. On Mac I've long had my Alfred hotkey set to double-tap command and it's so deeply ingrained in my muscle memory that I can't seem to ever remember my PowerToys Run shortcut on Windows!
Any plan for this at 2024?
