Enhancement: Modernize Color Picker UI inspired by 'PickMe' app

Open TheNomadInOrbit opened this issue 10 months ago • 5 comments

Description of the new feature / enhancement

Please Improve the current PowerToys Color Picker UI by taking inspiration from the 'PickMe' app. Key improvements include:

  1. Add a modern rounded UI indicator
  2. Show color name directly in the picker
  3. Include a dot grid pattern in the picker
  4. Add crosshair lines for precise color selection

The attached screenshot from 'PickMe' shows these features in action. This would make the PowerToys Color Picker more user-friendly and visually appealing.

Scenario when this would be used?

@UsmanTechJive You can show the colour name in the Color Picker already by going to Settings and checking the "Show color name" setting:

This gives you this output:

It could be argued that this should be on by default, as it's a pleasing feature and easy to miss.

I can certainly see the benefit of the crosshairs. Having a dot pattern as an alternative to the grid of squares in the current implementation also seems like a good compromise between seeing the boundary of the zoomed-in pixels and trying to keep the view uncluttered.

There is the question of what 'taking inspiration' looks like versus just copying features outright. I think others will have an opinion on whether some or all of this is feasible from that perspective.

I've tried PickMe, and I really like the crosshairs, dot pattern, and zoom. Indeed, it gives more control for selecting colors. So yes, it would be great to have that.

I agree that the color picker needs at least a crosshair cursor. I'm still using ColorCop (https://colorcop.net) because of that exact reason, Color Picker lacks precission.
