Wrong translation for color picker

Open CeelB-2055440 opened this issue 11 months ago • 11 comments

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.79.0

Utility with translation issue

ColorPicker

🌐 Language affected

Dutch

❌ Actual phrase(s)

image Houweel

✔️ Expected phrase(s)

Kleurenkiezer

ℹ Why is the current translation wrong

"Houweel" means pickaxe. (As in a handheld tool for mining and digging.) "Kleurenkiezer" means color picker in the context of: you have an image and you want to know the color of a certain pixel. If you translate it, you will also find "Kleurkiezer". This also means color picker; however, this is in the wrong context. In that case the context is: you have some predefined colors from which you can choose one. This is why the correct phrase should be "Kleurenkiezer".

Hah, I just saw the same thing! (also in Dutch) Actually, "Color Picker" should be treated as a name and therefore not be translated at all. Ref #29666

Translations of the different tool names seems somewhat arbitrary right now, some are in English, some in Dutch. But either language would be better than Houweel

Same problem in cs-CZ "Krumpáč" stands for "Pickaxe". "Color picker" could be translated as "Výběr barvy".

Hi! Thanks for making us aware of the problem. We raised the issue with our internal localization team. This issue should be fixed hopefully in the next version of PowerToys.

From my understanding, the original label is 'Pick' (verb), so the correct Dutch translation would be 'Kies' (also a verb) and not 'Kleurenkiezer' (which is a noun)

Rather than the imperative kies, I'd say that either kiezen or selecteren would probably be the correct term
