The dark mode configuration of PowerToys Run is not functioning.

Open dasu88 opened this issue 1 year ago • 14 comments

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.76.0

Installation method

PowerToys auto-update

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

PowerToys Run

Steps to reproduce

After updating to version 0.76.0, the dark mode of PowerToys Run is no longer functional. Its colors now correspond only to the application color configuration in the Windows system. However, I prefer to keep Windows in dark mode, have applications use light mode, and have PowerToys Run follow its color configuration settings. This was working correctly in the versions before the upgrade, but it is not functioning properly after the update.

✔️ Expected Behavior

Hope to switch to dark mode.

❌ Actual Behavior

Display in light mode.

Other Software

No response

For me, it was in some weird dual colors. It was in dark mode except for half of the top of the input box, which was a muted blue color. Toggling it between Windows default and light/dark got it to go away, but same thing I can't leave dark mode as my system is in dark mode.

Update: Rebooting PowerToys and it comes back: image

I have also ran into a similar issue, basically the powertoys option for theme would follow with the Windows color theme instead of the configuration of the app itself. Desktop Screenshot 2023 12 04 - 22 40 30 45

yeah, it's weird, sometimes this: image

and yeah, sometimes this. I think you get this if you set to Dark and restart PT. Is this the new dark? image

After upgrading to 0.76.1 dark mode appeared to be fixed but it doesn't stick. If I go to settings, select light mode and open PowerToys Run the theme will be light. If I then select dark mode and open PowerToys Run it is dark as I want, but it doesn't stay that way. I'll be using it for several hours and it will be dark, then one time when I open it, it will have reverted to the light theme again. I then have to select light, then select dark to get it dark again. But that only lasts for a random time before reverting.

@strandloper I witnessed this also. I thought I reverted my settings, but maybe not.

Above when you said "If I then select dark mode...", does this mean you toggled off Dark and then back to Dark (because it set to Dark), or was it set to Light or Windows default and then you set it to Dark?

jefflord avatar Dec 12 '23 12:12 jefflord

the same to me

I mean that PowerToys Run will be showing the light theme and when I open settings it has Dark selected as I want. Toggling by selecting Light, then Dark again makes PowerToys Run display the dark theme again, but it doesn't last. At some point when I open PowerToys Run it will be showing the light theme again.

So this one isn't fixed? Going to add it again to a project so it can be investigated.

It might be reacting to OS theme changes messages and overriding.

Is it not fixed in 0.77.0? At least there is mention there regarding themes. I installed this update and so far setting seems to be sticking.

Fixed theme setting. (This was a hotfix for 0.76)

I have not seen it to be an issue in a while. I think it's safe to say it's good and if there is a resurfacing of it, it could be logged as new or regression issue at that time.

I upgraded to 0.77.0 last night and will see if the problem reoccurs.

Info: I deleted my other post if you got a notification. Turned out that my PowerToys failed to update - and I did not realize. Sorry for the post.
