PowerToys should restart after an update

Open mathetes-for-life opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

Description of the new feature / enhancement

The program does not automatically restart after it is updated. It should.

Scenario when this would be used?

I extensively use FancyZones. I should not have to 'relaunch' PowerToys for FancyZones to work after the update has installed.

This should be a very simple fix. Part of the update runtine should relaunch. Why is this taking so long? Every user on the planet using this application cant rely on it working -- because automatic updates closes Powertoys.

The update process needs work:

  1. I get a notification that there is an update
  2. I click the notification
  3. I get to the powertoys main screen
  4. I have to click the in-app notification that there is an update
  5. I get to the update page
  6. I have to click the update button
  7. The updater does its thing
  8. I have to remember to restart powertoys

The process should be simplified as demonstrated by #31806, #30151, #27651.

  • The notification's default action should bring the user directly to the update page, skipping 3-4
  • The notification should contain a button to install right away on top of the existing button to open the app, skipping 3-6
  • The in-app notification should have a button to install right away on top of the existing button that brings you to the update page, skipping 5-6
  • The app should restart after update.

These steps would bring down cognitive load on update (which are quite frequent) to

  • Get a notification
  • Click install
