Fanzy Zones snap to grid startup problem

Open camputerr opened this issue 1 year ago • 6 comments

Microsoft PowerToys version

.71

Installation method

PowerToys auto-update

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

FancyZones

Steps to reproduce

I snap two windows in place (side by side) according to the grid I created. After a restart, the window on the right side will not stay in that position. When it opens up, it is automatically moved up and to the left, leaving a port of my desktop wallpaper visible on the bottom and right side of my open windows. I am then forced to re-snap that window in order for it to properly take up 50% of my screen.

✔️ Expected Behavior

I was hoping that after the restart, the two windows would remain in place, where they had been previously "snapped".

❌ Actual Behavior

Despite running version .71 I continue to have the issue described in Issue #24114 (though that discussion indicates the issue was resolved in version .68). I set up the zone layout in zone editor, and snap my windows into place (two windows side by side with each taking up 50% of my single ultrawide screen). After the restart, when I open up those windows, the window on the left of the screen is in place. The window on the right side of the screen is out of position, and I can see a portion of the desktop wallpaper below the window and to the right of the window. If I then re-snap the window to the zone, it will take up the full 50% of the screen on the right-hand side.

Please let me know if further info is needed.

I believe that I have the same issue, except my Zones overlap. I attached 2 screenshots showing the gaps and extensions. For me it consistently occurs whenever I restart certain applications. The affected applications do not take up the whole zone.

  • Affected applications don't extend all the way to the bottom or outside of the Zones and they extend beyond middle of the Zones.
  • The top of the Zones snap correctly.
  • Using the keyboard shortcut to move the windows corrects the issue.
  • Once corrected the issue doesn't return until the app is restarted.
  • It seems to affect some but not all Microsoft applications including Outlook (not including the "new interface"), OneNote, Teams, and Edge are the apps where I see it occur.
  • It affects 2 different machines with different monitors that I work on. One monitor is UW, the other is 16x9.
  • The issue has existed across multiple versions including 0.73 but I've only attempted to report it now as it's been an annoyance, but nothing more.
  • The issue surived reinstalling PowerToys, repairing Edge, and both repair options for Office.
  • If it matters I use the Microsoft Apps for Enterprise install of Office.

As I mentioned, it's a minor annoyance, but it's very consistent. I've been hoping that a routine update would fix it, but that's not been the case. FancyZones-BR FancyZones-BL FancyZones-Bottommiddle

I had also commented in the previous issue https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/24114 which got closed, but I don't believe it was ever resolved despite being closed. My experience is that both FancyZones and Windows 11 Snap Window do this, and only with certain apps as mentioned above. My app list is:

Microsoft Edge Google Chrome

Here are a couple of screenshots to show what's happening. First screenshot is with both windows snapped. Second screenshot is after restart, when windows are opened up. Screenshot before Restart Screenshot after restart and reopen

In order to get the windows to go back to the snapped position, I have to re-snap after each restart.

I've observed this behavior with Visual Studio and Firefox. Disabling "Move newly created windows to their last known zone" seem to resolve it, but with the drawback of losing that function.

Unfortunately I already have that disabled and still no go :(

same here, that setting is disabled but did not resolve the issue for me

After running with "Move newly created windows to their last known zone" off for a while now, I instead have other windows not opening in the correct place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. 🙃
