Area(s) with issue?

General, Quick Accent

Steps to reproduce

I have two problems with spell checking in PowerToys. One is linked to Quick Accent, the other one not. The problem I have with Quick Accent is described in the following fields. For the other one, while I am typing, I see tooltips that propose me several other typings. In one case they have been modal, and none of the proposed values were correct, this has led to crash Firefox, and I have lost everything I was typing. Further more, sometimes those tooltips take place on the screen near the keyboard cursor and prevent me from reading what is behind.

✔️ Expected Behavior

If I type "ça m'oblige à" (in a French text), I should expect that the text "ça m'oblige à" is kept, it is perfectly well written.

❌ Actual Behavior

"ça m'oblige à" is replaced by "ça m'obligéà", which has absolutely no meaning in French, except that it suggests a "text typed with the feet", as my neighbour says.

I realize I had a too short delay to activate Quick Accent. With a longer delay the problem is solved. Can you please do something about the font size of the infotips? Enabling the Windows magnifier each time I have to select an accentuated letter is not the solution. I guess the letters, but not the accents. Admit it is a pity, given the name of the tool. I usually display text with font size 22. For a tool that is displayed a short time at a specific place, a larger font would not be shocking.

So, I presume the title of the thread should be corrected, once I identified where to set options about the spell checker (this is the limit of treating two topics in the same thread; but I do not know where to post the other one).

Tooltips that propose other typings are not part of PowerToys, I believe? Not sure what to do here. So, I guess this issue is about requesting to increase the Quick Accent font size? Is that correct? /needinfo

Hello, In fact, there are two issues, as there are two sorts of intotips. On one side, once you trigger Quick Accent by a letter and a space, you get a list of possible accents on that letter. accents It would be nice that it could be displayed that size. On the other side, while I type, I see infotips to suggest me spellchecking modifications:

I am disappointed to learn that it does not come from PowerToys, as then I do not know where from. I should have sweared it appeared after the installation.

Looks like the OS built-in function.

I have the same issue, It suddenly appears to me out of no where this tooltip, and I'm sure it came after installation. Also, I get annoyed with auto-correction like when I type sure word I end up with suré, while I'm using only English qwerty keyboard layout. So, I had to uninstall it.

when I type sure word I end up with suré,

That's probably because of Quick Accent. @crutkas we should be careful for this unexpected behavior for new modules which are on by default.

Oh, it seems we shall have to deal with several problems and take care of avoiding to mix them up.

There is a following of a few infotips that appears at a certain position of the screen, as chosen in the configuration of Quick Accent. They all show the same letter, and each with an accent on it. This appears since last update, once I understood the delay of Quick Accent must not be at the minimum. You can choose among those accents, with a key depending on the Quick Accent configuration. I saw it run properly except the infotip is too little for my eyes.

There is an infotip that appears near the text I am typing, that proposes some variations from the text I typed. I have this for some years. It was interrupted a few hours after the update. (see my screen copy "text modification", where the infotips propose "texte", "TeX", "textes". Normally you can click on one to choose it. As I have a spell checker in each application, I should like to deactivate this. At least, chose another place on the screen could help, except in the case it became modal (this was with the last version of Firefox, 107).

About sure that became suré: I had that when I set the delay of Quick Accent too short. And the space after that was suppressed. It is even more strange in the case French is not in the chosen languages for Quick Accent. Abdulateef, do you have infotips, on your screen? Are they near what you type, or at the place selected in the configuration of Quick Accent? Did you put a sufficient delay in the configuration of Quick Accent?

Gluups avatar Nov 29 '22 08:11 Gluups

Sorry to respond late, I had infotips on my screen, and they are near to what I type. but I did not configure anything of Quick Accent, and I don't even what Quick Accent means. @Gluups

OK, then I am just going to answer your last question, as we are speaking about two categories of infotips, and one of them is related to Quick Accent. On a system where PowerToys has recently been updated, the PowerToys Parameters window shows categories on the left, the three first ones are General, Always Visible, Awake. Further down, the 12th is Power Rename, the 13th PowerToys Run, and the 14th Quick Accent. It is quite probable that in English you do not have the use of it, but many languages put accents on some letters. On one's native language you generally have most of the accents on the keyboard, but we live in an international context where you can have either to type a text in another language, or you have bought a computer in another country, and it can happen the accents you need are not on the keyboard. Quick Accents aims to bring a solution at that, and does it rather good. All this considered on a Latin alphabet, I am afraid I am not able to speak a lot of something else. If you want to have a try of Quick Accent, pay attention to set a not too short time. You will need a quarter of an hour to put everything in place and have an occasion to understand what it does.

Gluups avatar Dec 08 '22 08:12 Gluups

So if you have problem it is with the spell checker, it seems recently nobody was able to tell how to set its parameters.

Gluups avatar Dec 08 '22 08:12 Gluups

I may re-install it again and see if I still get the same issue and try to understand what really happens, thank any way.

Abdulateef-Muhammad avatar Dec 11 '22 12:12 Abdulateef-Muhammad

OK, if you observe something please tell us. I saw that spellchecker documented nowhere, and it remembered nothing to the developer of Quick Accent. Thank you.

Perhaps I shall also have to reinstall PowerToys for another reason, I shall open a thread about it anyway. It is not something to do directly on the impulse, as it takes some time during which the machine is not available.
