FancyZone layout editor is not launching

Open jraw350 opened this issue 2 years ago • 7 comments

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.64.1

Installation method

GitHub

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

FancyZones

Steps to reproduce

I installed PowerToys thought the .exe on github and ran it as an administrator. I tried to open the fancy zones editor and nothing seems to happen. Killed in task manager and relaunched as an admin to no avail. I have installed from the provided like .NET Core 3.1.xx and this seemed to do nothing.

dotnet --list-runtime The command could not be loaded, possibly because:

  • You intended to execute a .NET application: The application '--list-runtime' does not exist.
  • You intended to execute a .NET SDK command: No .NET SDKs were found.

Download a .NET SDK: https://aka.ms/dotnet-download

Learn about SDK resolution: https://aka.ms/dotnet/sdk-not-found

I assume that this is something that I am missing but it would be nice if a fresh install either told me that I would need to install additional files, or installed these dependencies for you.

How can I get fancy zones working?

✔️ Expected Behavior

Click on "Launch layout editor" Opens new window to create custom window layouts

❌ Actual Behavior

Click on "Launch layout editor" Nothing happens.

Other Software

Same or similar issue, but sporadic. Restarting PowerToys fixes the issue for me temporarily.

In your case, was this bug introduced in 0.64.1 or earlier? In logs I didn't see launching editor event before FancyZones restart. Was it happening on the latest version?

I think it also occurred on the prior v0.64.0, but I'm not positive.

When the issue occurs, the editor doesn't visually appear to start to launch; the wait cursor appears for a brief period as it does when the editor is launching, but nothing else happens.

@tim-elmer we don't have enough data to investigate the problem. Can you please provide us exact steps to reproduce the issue? For example, the issue occurs after the computer or PowerToys restart, after changing the monitor configuration, etc. And it would be nice if you provide a new bug report right after reproducing the problem, so it would be more obvious for us where to look at. /needinfo

Unfortunately, I've only experienced this issue on my work laptop (I believe it occurs after I undock and re-dock the laptop), and I've been swamped today. I'll see if I can reproduce and get a bug report on Monday.

Unable to reproduce so far, and there's an update available. I'll let this issue languish and reopen/open a new one if it occurs again.

Thank you for the feedback. Feel free to open a new issue if the bug occurs.
