Move/Copy File dialog when file exists

Open m-schmitt opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Description of the new feature / enhancement

Before Windows 10, if you drag to move or copy a file and the file name already exists at the target folder, it automatically prompted to ask what to do. It took one click to tell it to keep both files, by renaming the file being moved or copied.

Windows 10 changed this to be a multiple stop operation:

  1. Compare info for both files
  2. Click a check box to select the source file or folder
  3. Click another check box to select the target file or folder
  4. Continue.

The reason for this change was Windows wanted to allow the user to see the file statistics before making a decision. But the problem is that this is requiring more steps every single time even when the user only needs to see statistics once in a blue moon.

That is, when I'm copying files and the name already exists, 99.999999999% of the time I either want to replace or rename. I almost never need to see the statistics first. So the Windows 10 dialog is a drag on productivity.

The point of the PowerToy would be to allow the user to change this behavior, such as by setting file move/copy to allow one-click proceed-and-rename, like Windows 7.

Scenario when this would be used?

When using Explorer or the shell to move or copy files.

Hello and thanks for your message. Two quick thoughts:

  • you mean even the "apply to all" clicks are too much, right?
  • from the top of my head i remember a setting for Explorer, something like "show/suppress copy message". Typing on my phone right now, but if you find it before I do, let me know.
