Desktop Icon wrangling

Open m-schmitt opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Description of the new feature / enhancement

I move my laptop between two display sizes. The problem is that every single time I switch, Windows scrambles my carefully positioned icon arrangement on the Desktop. This isn't just resorting or aligning, and auto arrange is turned off. It strews the icons all over the desktop.

The purpose of the PowerToys would be to reign in this behavior, so that icons remain where they were when changing display sizes, when possible.

I don't need to be able to save multiple configurations of icons, except that perhaps one solution is to save configurations tied to the display size.

Scenario when this would be used?

This would be used when using a machine that can be connected to different display configurations, such as:

  • Different display resolution
  • High DPI or not
  • Single or multiple displays
  • Remote controlling via Remote Desktop

Supporting information

I'm using Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2

You might look into a third party program called "Fences" by Stardock which I've used for years and might help. It lets you group icons together in boxes. On my dual monitors, my icons get tossed all over the place every time I upgrade my graphics drivers, but at least with this the icons stay in their respective "fence" box so I can just drag the whole groups back to where they need to go.
