I was thinking that the middle scroll button of the mouse would be a nice button to use to select multiple files in file explorer instead of having to hold down the control key.

Scenario when this would be used?

Anytime a user wishes to select multiple files in a slightly more ̶l̶a̶z̶y̶ streamlined fashion.

Middle mouse button in File Explorer opens a folder item in a new tab (Windows 11) so you could only use it for files.

Have you turned on selection checkboxes in File Explorer, that also allows multiple selections without holding Ctrl, although with a smaller target to point at.
