Rate drops to 15Hz every minute

Hi! I am using two Kinect for Azure devices on my Ubuntu machine. They are running AzureKinectDK_Fw_1.6.102075014.bin and libk4a 1.3.0 is installed on the PC. The cameras are connected via 10m long active USB-3.0 cables. On one of my computers the cameras seem to work fine. On another one I see the following behavior: The rate of one of the cameras drops to 15FPS for one second and then returns to 28-30FPS. This happens pretty reliably every minute. Interestingly, this coincides with the output "Initializing or re-initializing the device to realtime offset: X ns". The behavior is not always shown by the same camera and sometimes both cameras are affected. But once started, the behavior is consistent.

What I have tried:

  1. Used different USB3 Cables => no effect.
  2. Used the cameras with their cables on the other PC => the behavior is not seen here. However, I noticed that the "Actual loop time" warning output here seems lower than on the affected PC.
  3. Used only one camera => problem seems to reduce, but not disappear.

My observations make me think that this either has something to do with the clocks of the PC and the Kinects or that the affected PC is simply struggling keeping up and thus the CPU is too slow (even though the overall system load and CPU load is totally fine).

Do you have any insights / is this known behavior? Thanks in advance!

Hello @jdeeee, Thank you for reporting this. @qm13 FYI. The ROS node is a thin wrapper around the Azure Kinect SDK. In this case, the ROS node has detected that the camera time is drifting too far out of sync with the system and reinitializes it. While this code could be removed (or configurable), you would notice that the kinect frames will quickly lag behind realtime.

Previous investigations into this issue seem to be hardware specific. ASK: Could you post the hardware specs for your systems?

I think the Azure Kinect SDK would be specifically interested in the USB chipsets, firmware and driver versions.

The Kinect for Azures are individually connected (on both systems) to a PCI USB3.0 card (the one with the Fresco Controller). Hope this helps! :)

Hi! I have (sort of) figured out what the problem was. Our computer is collecting data about its state every minute for monitoring purposes. Once monitoring is turned off, the described behavior disappears. Unfortunately, I can't exactly tell right now what part of the monitoring causes the issues.
