Custom weekly budget option

Open coreyzev opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

I would like to be able to define a custom weekly budget for myself. I feel like 200 is too high and 20 is too low for my situation.

Describe the solution you'd like I would like to see an additional radio button added under the current 4 saying "Custom Caution Budget". When selected, a number input field would show up underneath with some context. A submit button to the right of it. When pressed the risk profile would update accordingly.

Ideally (but extra work) there would be updating text with the percentage and similar information to the other caution budgets. On key-up, they would update live since they're just flat calculations.

Additional context I can probably do this myself but I'm not sure. I haven't written code in a long while. And while I was proficient at JavaScript I am a total noob at typescript. If I do start an attempt I will keep this issue updated and connected. If there are no further comments from me here, I have not started it.

I can also add a UI mockup to this issue if helpful.

Thank you for making this tool.

I'd like to add my voice as a +1 for this request. Personally, I find the calculator very helpful in deciding what risks to take, but the chances of getting COVID in my area are simply so high that even simply living with a fully-vaccinated, boosted partner or roommate whose actions I don't control is considered "high risk" or even "dangerously high risk" even on the low caution budget. As a result, the safety meter and weekly risk budget are both useless to me. It would be even less helpful to a frontline or essential worker. Adding an ability to specify a custom "harm reduction" budget - even a 50% chance of catching COVID in a year is better than a 100% chance, after all - would help a lot of people immensely as a result.

Overall - and this is a broader philosophical discussion not suited to a single issue - I think the tool should consider adapting to help those who are at the most risk mitigate as much risk as they can.

Put another way, rather than being focused solely on those who want to and can afford to make whatever concessions are necessary to stay almost totally safe (which is how it feels currently, to me at least), it would be better to also try to help those who simply want to understand the risks they're taking without being told "you are doing something dangerous on the basis of what this tool deems to be safe." I think a lot of people who are unwilling to change their behavior simply because someone says "that's dangerous", could be convinced to do less-harmful things if given nonjudgmental numbers that say "okay, fine, but here is what you risk if you do this."
