Prism2 PCMCIA WiFi cards not working on A600
When trying to use a Prism2 wifi card on an A600 with Emu68 it causes the machine to hang/freeze, and the only way to recover is to hard reboot the machine.. Cards work fine when used without Emu68.
I have personally tried two different models of Netgear M401, and a D-Link card, and same issue with all of them. Other discord members have tried other cards and various WPA firmwares and have the same issue. (Only one user appears to have their card working OK).
(Before anyone mentions it, Z2 memory is already set to 0)
NOTE: this issue is specifically for the A600. If you have issues with an A1200 then post on the relevant issue or raise a new one!!
Hi, if it can help, my Lucent Tecnologies PCMCIA on A1200, works fine (with no WPA/WPA2 active).
This issue is specifically for the A600, the issue is not present on an A1200

Confirmed to happen on A1200 too. I will investigate.
On my A600, I could use my wifi card with Roadshow (with fixed ip) and MiamiDX (with dhcp) too. The card is Avaya ETS Gold (Lucent PC24E-H-ET). The wifi connection it's using WPA/TKIP auth.
More information on the attached screenshots. If I could help with any extra debug data please let me knw.
So looks like that's now two people with working Prism2 cards on an A600, but many people with the same locking up the machine issue

Yes, I know. This is the reason why I would like to help if possible.
I can confirm lockups on my A1200 also when using a Linksys wireless adapter (prism2 driver). Sometimes it will not recognize the card when the wireless software is first launched. When it does work and I am surfing around the web or downloading from my local FTP, it will soon lockup the entire Amiga, forcing me to reboot. NOTE: tested only with encryption disabled.
The same system is working fine with my D-Link wired PCMCIA adapter and cnet driver.
I can confirm lockups on my A1200 with a Prism2-based NL-2511CF Mercury WiFi card and CoffeineOS.
I added z2_ram_size=0 in cmdline.txt
Workaround steps
- Remove Wifi card.
- Boot into CoffeineOS.
- Insert WiFi Card. It will freeze.
- Reboot.
- Boot into CoffeineOS.
This should be a duplicate of an existing issue then? I also reported this on A1200 - if card is inserted at boot time, no problem with detection. If card is inserted "hot" after boot, or removed after booting with card, then the machine will freeze.
In my case it was a wired ethernet pcmcia card, not a wifi card. Note that the freeze also occurred with a CF-card for file transfers, I believe? So not necessarily related to networking at all.
Here's the likely duplicate, and we can collapse the bugs perhaps? https://github.com/michalsc/Emu68/issues/207
This is already set by default in the Emu68 config, and it not the issue. This is specifically for an A600. The issue you are reporting is already raised on #207

For WiFi PCMCIA cards, add z2_ram_size=0 in cmdline.txt This Z2 RAM allocation causes a freeze on cold/warm boot when the PCMCIA WiFi card is plugged in.
Full 32-bit 68K CPUs shouldn't allocate Z2 RAM since it could step on the PCMCIA's memory address range.

No, the lockup issue on the a600 is not the same. This issue is specifically for the A600 and only with a Prism2 WiFi card using any Pi. Other PCMCIA cards (eg, wired network cards) are fine.
The a1200 locks up on insertion and removal of ANY PCMCIA card specifically when using a Pi4, and can be made to work using a workaround. It is NOT a duplicate, so NO we can't collapse the bugs.
The A600 does NOT lockup on insertion and removal. The A600 totally locks up when the WiFi PCMCIA is accessed by Miami/Genesis/Roadshow/CardPrep/etc. And has been well tested and replicated by several A600 users with a range of PCMCIA cards.
The "Gayle reset" addon board fixes my A1200's freeze PCMCIA WiFi issue. My A1200 with PCMCIA WiFi doesn't freeze from a cold start.

This issue is for Prism2 WiFi cards in an A600. Amiga 600s do not have the same reset bug.
Please see the A1200 PCMCIA issue, which affects all PCMCIA cards, here #207
For #207, I don't have a 512MB CF card.
I have a Prism2-based NL-2511CF Mercury WiFi CF card (with SanDisk Compact Flash to PCMCIA adapter) and 3Com 3CCE589ET PCMCIA Ethernet cards.
I have fewer freeze problems with the 3Com 3CCE589ET PCMCIA Ethernet card.

Issue still remains on the A600 with Beta2. Wifi cards still freeze the machine.

Both A1200 and A600 have the same Gayle chip and both machines are accelerated by PiStorm with Emu68.
With Emu68, the A1200 Galye reset fix only fixed the already-inserted WiFI card during the cold start.
After booting AmigaOS, swapping the PCMCIA WiFi card results in a freeze.
I have TF1260 as a CPU accelerator and AmigaKit 4MB/5.5MB/8MB RAM+FPU card reference points. I don't have a Phase 5 Blizzard card as a reference card.

Again, this issue is for the A600 PCMCIA WiFi issue where the cards do not work at all and lock the machine.
This issue has NOTHING to do with an A1200 where WiFi cards work ok (just have issues with locking up on insertion/removal which should be mostly resolved in beta2). The PCMCIA reset issue that affects A1200s also does not affect the A600.
If you have issues with PCMCIA on your A1200, please post them on the correct issue and not this one. I have even given the correct issue number, #207, in previous comments!
Quite interesting issue…
Got two MA401 here, both work at cold boot and even connect during startup with Genesis… Streaming music with AmigaAMP works flawless. Only my 3rd WiFi card - an SMC - freezes the A600 when powering up the PSU. I have to disconnect, powercycle and plug it in as soon as the floppy clicks. Then it works too.
If you can find what firmware the cards have on them that would be useful to help the rest of us troubleshoot. Along with your motherboard revision, PiStorm firmware, and Emu68 build
Looks like you are one of the lucky few that have a working card

Sadly I have no XP Laptop at hand... searching for one at a reasonable price since months.
The Amiga 600 is a Rev 1.3 PiStorm600 with Pi 3A+ (firmware should be the default one, never installed one manually) Emu68 Build Beta 2
As for the firmwares...
- SMC - unknown, bought used
- Netgear MA401 (with faded letters) - unknown, bought used
- Netgear MA401 - primary FW 1.1.1 and station FW 1.7.4, flashed by a friend
MA401 firmwares may be different, since the one with the faded letters on the back often stutters at Audio streaming.
All of them work on my Amiga 600 with Pistorm. But only the MA401 ones can be plugged in when powering one, otherwise freeze. Yesterday 7 hours continous AmigaAMP music streaming with the SMC one. Today it's time for testing the MA401 with known firmware... running since 10 o'clock.
I'm not sure if this is a related issue. I am also having the same issue with a Laneed LD-CDY wired card. It works fine without the PiStorm, but with the PiStorm I get a black screen, although I believe the A600 is working just not displaying anything, as the drive is clicking away and keyboard CAPS lock activity seems to be normal. I have also recently come into possession of a Archos Overdrive HD for the A600. It works perfectly with the A600 on its own, but if I add the PiStorm I get the same behaviour as the N/W card.
I'm having this exact issue with my pcmcia wifi card too on my A1200 using the latest emu68. The system will completely freeze if the card is inserted when the power is first turned on. It will also sometimes cause a freeze in the middle of authentication when I start wireless manager. I also tried setting z2 memory to 0 as someone suggested above but that didn't help.
It's a linksys card
EDIT:
I just realised this issue only occurs when I have the wifi card in the right angle pcmcia adapter. If I plug in the wifi card directly into the slot it seems to be ok. It's weird though because even with that adapter it still sometimes works
EDIT 2: It just froze without the adapter. So turns out not using the adapter may help but won't solve it entirely
