Ken suggests using masks derived from the 2MASS LGA: http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/applications/2MASS/LGA/atlas.html http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/applications/2MASS/LGA/2MASS_LGA_photometry.tbl This might solve the poor astrometric accuracy around some bright objects.
