Build fails on 10.9.5 Mavericks

It went very far, but failed with this message:

but freetype is already installed:

edwards-air:~ emv$ brew install freetype

so I'm not sure what's going on; investigating.

The freetype issue seems to be related to

https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-python/issues/74

and perhaps fixed by
