Was this always broken? I'm trying to think why this is breaking now if there haven't been significant changes in the last months/years to this code generator.

@ocallesp I actually think this is handled by us in MS.VS.Editors.MyApplication and it's a high impact bug that needs a fix.

This PR would benefit from having this API updated: https://github.com/dotnet/project-system/pull/8044. I'll hold merge until we have it ready.

We'd rather not, as we suspect changes in #8044 will fix the issue in the source code generator that takes the myapp file (see https://github.com/dotnet/project-system/pull/8322#issuecomment-1195925470). I'm coordinating offline.

Closing as I will be bringing this to main directly.

Triage: we have to consider a more user-friendly approach to show when targets fails, in error list or log.
