No sound Kali or Ubuntu, pulseaudio fails to start

I installed the latest version of Linux Deploy on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, which is running the LineageOS 14.1-20181107-Nightly-chagallwifi ROM. I have two profiles successful set-up: one with Ubuntu 18.04 and the other with Kali Linux.

Sound does not work under either profile. Audio output is enabled under Properties with host: 127.0.0.1 and Port 4712 for both profiles. Pulseaudio is installed on the image for both profiles.

When I run Pulseaudio using "systemctl --user enable pulseaudio && systemctl --user start pulseaudio" under both Kali and Ubuntu, I get the error "Failed to start pulseaudio.service: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1." When I run "pulseaudio --start" on both, I get "N: [pulseaudio] main.c: User-configured server at 127.0.0.1:4712, refusing to start/autospawn."

How do I fix this?

Also, why doesn't pulseaudio install by default on these images if we have audio output enable prior to installing the image?
