I do not believe this is related to that issue but is a feature request. Are you suggesting using a custom field rather than the custom certificate code?
The template is created at site level which won't have the same options to choose from for the 'date issued' element. If you load the template, then edit that element...
You mean, if you edit the element, re-choose the option you want, and then click save it does not work?

It's a pretty complex task that tries to achieve a lot. I would be happy to merge any code that improves this task (maybe adding some caching?).
