It seems this is a problem inside libcamerify. I recommend to address it to its developers.
Try `sudo modprobe bcm2835-v4l2` and then start ustreamer via libcamerify.

There is a small chance that your host has cached the EDID data. You can try some other EDID from existing monitors that you haven't tried yet (http://docs.pikvm.org/edid)

Ah, RealVNC. Paradoxically, RealVNC is very far from open VNCs and for the most part implements its own proprietary protocols. It has never worked at all and I doubt it...
I haven't come up with a good solution yet.
JFYI I'm thinking of a server-side implementation for this.
