What’s new in 7-Zip 24.00 Beta January 30, 2024 7-Zip now can unpack ZSTD archives (.zst filename extension). 7-Zip now can unpack ZIP, SquashFS and RPM archives that use ZSTD compression method. 7-Zip now supports fast hash algorithm XXH64 that is used in ZSTD. 7-Zip now can unpack RAR archives (that use larger than 4 GB dictionary) created by new WinRAR 7.00. 7-Zip now can unpack DMG archives that use XZ (ULMO/LZMA) compression method. 7-zip now can unpack NTFS images with cluster size larger than 64 KB. 7-zip now can unpack MBR and GDP images with 4 KB sectors. Speed optimizations for archive unpacking: rar, cab, wim, zip, gz. Speed optimizations for hash caclulation: CRC-32, CRC-64, Blake2sp. The bug was fixed: 7-Zip for Linux could fail for multivolume creation in some cases. Some bugs were fixed.

When 7-Zip does support Zstd now, I can close this project. These are good news ;-)

When 7-Zip does support Zstd now, I can close this project.

Not until lz4/lz5/lizard etc are supported

BTW, when 7-Zip finally supports Zstd in 7z container, will it be able to unpack 7z archives compressed by this fork?

But it only supports decompression for now, right? It's not a replacement for this project, yet ;)

Well, the updated 7zip lacks file creation and "save as..." options due to Pavlov sorting out a few bugs in this context. The installer here is outdated, and properly conjoining this to the current builds will be a headache.

Meanwhile the codecs (currently the best option) lacks many functions, such as working with distinct compression file formats.

I agree with all the comments. This project is very valuable IMO. I think a possible solution is to open it to more contributors, if the current owner is willing to share the burden of maintaining the fork. Especially document the build process.

I would recommend continuing this project. So far 7 zip is extract only

So for now, 7-Zip source for v24.01 isn't there currently: 7z2401-src.7z ... I think I will skip v23 and update directly to v24. I someone wants to fix my v23 branch for release, I am open to it.

Makes total sense to me, ie update directly to v24.

Does "next Saturday" mean May 18 or May 25? (Post date is May 16)

May 18 is ment.

mcmilk avatar May 16 '24 11:05 mcmilk

May 18 is ment.

Thanks for answering my question. In some language it is called "this Saturday", which is different from English.
