git branch name fails to update dynamically

Could this be an issue with powerline, or with the version control info subsystem?

For shell-mode buffers, could powerline please obtain and display the current vc branch name, similar to how powerline does for file buffers?

I'd like powerline to show the current git branch in other modes as well, such as shell sessions. What's a hook for doing this?
