Please rename this fork if it gets a public release
Hi,
as this is the fork from the original GOsa project, it would be bad to release future version numbers under the same name. Even if it looks like upstream is stalled, there are various changes that are not released yet. This will confuse users and raise contact/responsibility issues while GONICUS has the legal rights for this name.
So - if you plan to release this one officially, please give it another name. If you don't plan to do this, I don't care ;-)
Thanks, Cajus
Hi Cajus,
if that's what you want I'll do it. My reasoning for keeping the name was that I didn't want to pretend that this is something new. It is still 99% original GOsa code. Do you want to me to eliminate the GOsa name completely, including replacing the in-program logos and instances where the name is mentioned? Or do just want the Debian packages to have different names?
MSB
If you have more complicated wishes for where you want to keep the name and where not, you could clone my repo, replace the GOsa name with "Foobar" wherever you want it gone and send me a pull request. Same goes for the mentioning of GONICUS.
To expand on this discussion: Do you rule out that GONICUS would provide commercial support for my fork? So if someone asks me about support should I tell them not to contact you?
This all only applies if you plan to release it: keep it simple - just don't use the name "GOsa" in announcements, because that may mix things up. If you plan to upload to Debian, you've to rename at least the packages and make it conflict gosa*. That would be the second GOsa fork in Debian. Not easy to argument. It is used by the Debian school related projects.
I don't know what you're planing to do - if your code is 99% upstream, why don't you provide pull requests, or request push rights to upstream? We like OpenSource software, so in most cases there's no need to put too much work into forking, theming, renaming, etc.
I can even offer a merging session in munich if you want to, so a 2.8 can be released together. I'm really OK with more community integration - so: choose your weapon.
It would be great if we could work towards an official 2.8 release. I was just under the impression that GONICUS had decided to go a different route and do a more radical redesign with GOsa 3.0/Clacks.
Hi Matthias, sorry for not answering yet. Some hospital stuff. GOsa/Clacks, did not get much attention in the last few years. Thats how it is in project driven companies...
To get ready with some discussion on how to/roadmap/whatever, please contact me using [email protected]. Or by phone. JMG has my number ;-)
