Iss 250 breaking valid on

@HomoCodens somehow this doesn't work for me. I get

Error in if (is.null(valid_on) | is.na(valid_on)) { : 
  argument is of length zero

In addition, merging this is a bit cumbersome, because I parked the _tests in inst/_tests because of CRAN issue I don't want to look at atm.

I think we got this fixed otherwise in the meantime, don't we ?
